Phase 1 — “Slap & Ship” — Design of a system to tag products according to the latest customer requirements. This type of RFID solution commonly involves adding a tagging station in a distribution center to which pallets ready for shipment are re-routed for breakdown, tagging, and re-assembly. The objective is to deploy a tagging solution at the lowest overall cost.

Phase 2 — Foundation —Development of centralized control and management of an RFID network and deployment of a foundation for initial ROI opportunities.

Phase 3 — Solution — Identification of business function owners that can expand RFID in select business processes to drive ROI. This is based on the business case and long- term roadmap developed during the foundation phase. Deployment extends across multiple nodes within the supply chain and typically involves sharing RFID data with trading partners. Application areas include:

• Automating distribution processes
• Eliminating shipment/receipt errors
• Reducing excess inventory
• Preventing out-of-stock situations

Phase 4 — Enterprise — The executive team drives RFID expansion across multiple business functions to build competitive advantage through broad adoption of the technology. Suppliers are required to tag products for shipment, and RFID data tracking goods movement and inventory are widely shared with suppliers and customers. Core business processes are re-engineered to take advantage of real-time visibility of goods movement from the point of original manufacture to the point of final purchase and consumption.
